It is sad knowing that the practice of safety razor shaving has taken a serious decline. The new fancy, disposable razors are part of a huge problem of waste and increased skin problems. Think of all the plastic and metal you are tossing in the bin every month. Multiple blade disposable heads get tossed out at an alarming rate, and the cost of replacing them can be staggering. (I recently did a scan of the local market and saw a 5 pack of blades tagged at over $30)
These new designs irritate the skin and cause ingrown hairs, razor bumps, razor burn and skin redness. The point at where tradition was lost to the new fangled, high-tech razors we don't know, but happily the safety razor is making a come back. You can find great designs in razors by companies such as Omega, Merkur, Edwin Jagger, Muhle, Parker and others. These makers each make razors of various designs and differing price points. The materials have become more interesting as well, with more companies introducing different metals and even woods for a more personalized look. You can find razors with long handles, straight or tapered handles, gold or platinum plating, knurled handles or even coloured ones. The variety is wide and varied. Once you got the razor you like, buy a set of sample blades and get to work.
With the use of a good Safety Razor and a sharp blade, this is what you get:
Multi-blade electric shavers are no match for a double-edged safety razor. Cartridge razors are a poor design. The blades are designed to gently stretch the skin and cut off the hair at a point slightly below the surface of the skin. This aggressiveness is what causes shaving problems, as described above. There is a marked reduction in these difficulties by shaving with a good quality safety razor. The result is more consistent and more enjoyable shaves. The single blade prevails.
Following a proper shaving routine will provide you with consistently good shaves. It may take a bit more attention to detail than using an electric shaver or multi-blade disposable, but in the end the results speak for themselves.
